A salute to the American Battle Patch
The Battle Patch worn by United States service members may appear backwards but is actually designed with a purpose. The design dates back to United States mounted cavalry and infantry units who designated a “standard bearer” who carried the flag into battle. The canton of the flag (blue field white stars) was mounted closest to the flagpole. As the standard bearer charged into battle his momentum would cause the flag to stream back. If the flag was leading with the stripes it would symbolize retreating. In 2003 the U.S Department of Defense honored this tradition by approving the battle patch. This regulation required the flag to be “assaulting forward” which the stars and field were leading into battle. In 2005 the patch was made standard for all service uniforms. Wearing the American flag with such bright colors could make a soldier more of a target so a muted version was introduced to fit in with the camouflage uniform. The respect for this tradition is not limited to military uniforms. As the battle patch as seen on law enforcement, fire service uniforms, government vehicles, aircraft, and spacecraft. Liberty Art Works (Veteran and First-Responder owned-and-operated company) salutes this tradition by presenting the Battle Patch Plaque cast in solid bronze as an admirable way to recognize service members. Quality that is still proudly Made in the USA!
